“Since the early 1970s, the works of Johannes BRUS have addressed the dialectic of nature and culture, of the foreign and the familiar, of the real and the surreal. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is presenting him in his first US solo exhibition. Of particular importance for the selection was the special visual language, which suggests echoes of Dada and Surrealism. In addition to these photographic works, a selection of sculptures will also be shown, which illuminate the range and special relationship between photography and sculpture in his work. In an alchemical way, he plays with the medium of photography by reversing, violating or ignoring its rules. He maltreated his photos and thus created new photographic images by reworking, collaging, destroying and breaking the rules.” (© Kerber Verlag, 2018)
