"'The Aspen Series' are artisticly following the photographs of buildings by japanese architect group Sanaa ('Sanaa', 2007) and the Iran series in 'Recollection' (2011).
Since the end of the 1980s Walter NIEDERMAYR is working in alpine areas and is looking for a creative way to show people's presence and changing hands on landscapes.
Two years NIEDERMAYR ha
s worked on his Alpine Landscapes. In forty-two multipart photo and video works, the artist depicts the winter landscape of the ski resort in the Rocky Mountains.
The work is marked by the beautiful illusion of the ski resort Aspen and the wintry mountain world surrounding it. Yet at the same time the visual sequences reflect upon their own reality, which the artist reveals through the medium of photography.
For one, they feature snowy landscapes, recreation centers, and sophisticated, tourist-oriented urban spaces, while touching upon the limitations of the representational." (publisher's note, © Hatje Cantz, 2013)
