Background information
"The exhibition 'LAND_SCOPE. Photographic Works from Roni Horn to Thomas Ruff from the DZ Bank Art Collection' at the Munich City Museum and the catalog are dedicated to the representation of landscape in postmodern and contemporary photographic art. Since the late 18th century, Romantic art has shaped our idea of idyllic and sublime nature. Painters such as Philipp Otto Runge, but above all Caspar David Friedrich, pushed them into the focus of attention. But Friedrich already went beyond Runge's symbolization of universal creative power in metaphysical fantasy landscapes, in that as a brilliant technical designer he processed real landscape scenes into images full of symbolic meaning. Many of these paintings captivate with their enchanting as well as oppressive depiction of spatial expanse and emptiness. A way of seeing that also characterizes contemporary photographic art, which increasingly focuses on the transformation of natural and working landscapes and addresses the effects of industrialization - including agriculture - and urban sprawl.
Content
The catalog 'LAND_SCOPE. Photographic Works from Roni Horn to Thomas Ruff' brings together works by around 60 artists from the DZ BANK Kunstsammlung's holdings. Divided into seven chapters rich in images and text, the exhibition presents a variety of ways in which artists approach the landscape through the medium of photography: For example, different types of landscapes such as ideal landscapes or deserts, political territories, agricultural landscapes are called up; the forces of form and potentials for abstraction in the photographic image are also presented, so that landscape is negotiated as a concept or even appears as a digital entity.
The catalog contains photographs by Peter BIALOBRZESKI, Lucinda DEVLIN, William EGGLESTON, Luigi GHIRRI, Beate GÜTSCHOW, Raphael HEFTI, Dan HOLDSWORTH, Carsten HÖLLER, Roni HORN, Axel HÜTTE, Magdalená JETELOVA, Sven JOHNE, Peter KEETMAN, Robert LONGO, Richard MOSSE, Heinrich RIEBESEHL, Thomas RUFF, Adrian SAUER, Stephen SHORE, Hiroshi SUGIMOTO, Anna VOGEL et al.
