Personal statement by Japanes photo artist Jin OHASHI
"It is clear to me that every human being has a vocation (...) We are all made to take our place in a certain place that is already prepared for us ... At this moment I live in this world in which we all live. I wanted to take my place in this place." (freely translated, Jin OHASHI)
Background information
"Jin OHASHI is one of the most popular and important photographers in Japan. His work in previous volumes such as 'Menomaenotsuduki' and 'Ima' surprised audiences with its dynamic realism. In the fall of 2013, after an absence of seven years, he published this book of photographs, 'Surrendered Myself to the Chair of Life'.
'Surrendered Myself to the Chair of Life' asks us to look at the place where we live, the place where life begins. It is a fundamental work that reflects the life of an individual rather than society as a whole. By exploring the ultimate boundaries of life, new meanings can be created through the formation of relationships with others. It is this approach that makes Jin OHASHI's work multi-layered and significant." (free translation of publisher's text, © Akaaka, 2013)
"Jin OHASHI has a natural flair for photography. He is truly in a class of his own." (© Nobuyoshi ARAKI)
