Background information, personal statement by Akihito YOSHIDA.
"Searing flames, rising black smoke, beads of sweat on sooty faces, angry male voices echoing through the air, and the smell of fuel oil. Since my first visit to Bangladesh in 2012, I have repeatedly visited and photographed the people who make the ships' "screws." They worked in a small, dark, cavernous workshop. There, adults and children worked together to make a cold, hard metal by pouring a molten red liquid like magma into the pitch-black floor, which was covered with iron sand. It was like a world of creation myths.
Stillness and movement, softness and hardness, light and shadow, regeneration and destruction. The screw is made with the tremendous labor of the workers as fuel. Again and again, I was absorbed by the tremendous energy swirling in that small workshop, staring at it as if I were devouring it." (Akihito Yoshida)

The cover of the photo book 'The Screw' by Akihito YOSHIDA is printed on a RISO graphic printing press, the title name has been stamped, and the author's name has been handwritten by the Japanese photographer for each book.The screws shown in this book are all handmade, and each screw is slightly different from the others. At the end of the book is the novel 'The Screw' by Ishii Shinji. The book design is by Tamon YAHAGI, who has worked on many of Akihito YOSHIDA's photography books." (© Three Books, 2023)
