Background information
"In industrialized Western society, animals are becoming disposable. Every year, countless animals end up in animal shelters, in rescue centers or at sanctuaries. Or, if they are not lucky, at the slaughterhouse. There are many reasons why they end up in these places. Overburdened owners who are not familiar with the exotic species, but were ultimately just looking for a nice decoration for the living room. Pets that become a burden and are then disposed of somewhere. Due to the pandemic in particular, many people have acquired a pet without realizing the long-term consequences. Animal shelters are fuller than ever. The animals that live in human care are completely dependent on it, regardless of whether it is cold outside or the vacations are temptingly just around the corner. But many people forget the responsibilities that come with acquiring a living creature, the attraction is too tempting. But the suffering that results is hard to bear. Many look the other way, and some don't even want to know about it.

The photographic volume'Wegwerfartikel' (Disposable Items) by Sara AFFOLTER, which was awarded a prize by the FEP - Federation of European Professional Photographers, features all kinds of characters. From courageous sheep to wild birds and nimble rats. But all of them have experienced trauma and bear their scars. Some are clearly recognizable, others carry them invisibly."
