Background information
"Borders are initially to be seen as a means of separation. They separate two sides, define a here and a there. At the same time, they also draw a portrait of what is within the borderline, conveying a sense of security and safety. And although they claim to be eternally valid, nothing is as changeable as borders. It is ironic that people or entire nations develop so much pride and protectionism because of borders, even though they know that they are fictitious entities that are constantly changing or even disappearing altogether. Some borders have shifted by only a few hundred meters due to climatic changes or landscape interventions, others have disappeared because the great empires on both sides have fallen. In a time of mass migration, border walls and growing nationalism, they show the changeability of these man-made territorial markers.
