Personal statement by Nan GOLDIN
"This is a book about beauty and about my love for my friends." (freely translated, Nan GOLDIN)
Background information
"This photo volume 'The Other Side' by Nan GOLDIN is an expanded and updated version of her landmark photo book first published in 1993. The new edition appears at a time when the discourse on gender and sexual orientation is evolving; the volume traces part of the history shaping this new visibility.
Content
The first photos in the book 'The Other Side' by Nan GOLDIN date from the 1970s, when she lived with a group of drag queens in Boston and documented their glamour and vulnerability. In the early 1980s, she chronicled the lives of transgender friends in New York as AIDS began to decimate their community. In the 1990s, she recorded the explosion of resistance as a social phenomenon in New York, Berlin, Bangkok, and the Philippines. She photographed their public figures and showed their real lives behind the scenes.
Her latest photos are intimate portraits of some of her most beloved friends, imbued with tenderness. 'The Other Side' is her tribute to the queens she has loved and lost many of over the past four decades." (publisher's text freely translated and slightly adapted, © Steidl, 2019)
