Background information
"This photo book, 'Magic Eye', is the first presentation of René GROEBLI's images from a round half century - but without any claim to completeness. The publisher, picture editor & gallery owner Mirjam Cavegn personally selected the images and introduced us to the broad spectrum of René GROEBLI's photography. She published this publication with her gallery as a tribute to an artist she has represented for many years, built friendship with him over the years and dedicated several exhibitions to his work. René GROEBLI has already climbed the Olympus of photographic history with his early work 'Magic of the Rail' (1949) and 'The Eye of Love' (1952) - and yet his life's work encompasses much more. He has spent over six decades searching single-mindedly and experimentally for images that both make visual assumptions and break new ground - whether within the four walls of his studio, in his dark room or in his Alsatian country house, whether on the road London or Paris, Ireland or Peru.
Content
"We can't help but feel that here at work is a shaman of photographic grit and chromatic brilliance, an uncompromising craftsman trying out an endless array of ideas. It is a feast for the eyes as this artist and photographer's life's work passes in review. Each The image of this artist is a reminder of the time lived. An outstanding, amazing body of work has accumulated over his lifetime. This publication, 'Magic Eye', is a testament to that. An enchanted world, page by page. It shows René GROEBLI as a magician with the camera and the camera as his magic eye." (© Daniel Blochwitz, from the preface of 'Magic Eye')
The photographs in 'Magic Eye' are not arranged in strict chronological order, but represent a lyrical response to René GROEBLI's approach, for his perception of the world is as palpable as it is seen. Thus we encounter the sizzling eroticism of the bride and groom in Paris and eloquent testimony to the artist's admiration for his partner Rita. We discover his fascination with movement and speed, brilliantly rendered through blurred and almost breakneck angles. And we encounter the rich hues of his unique, innovative color photography, through which even commissioned works become timeless art. The visceral poetry of René GROEBLI's images erupts again and again, touching the core of our being." (freely translated, © Bildhalle Zurich, 2019)
