Kirill GOLOVCHENKO has photographed one of the largest market places in the world, '7 km' from Odessa. Oldest part of the market was set up immediately after the Second World War, that is to say, to the bygone Soviet times, is still called 'Field of Miracles'.
On 70 hectares of former wheat fields and the site of a waste incineration plant, there is one state in the state: more than 16,000 shipping containers, stacked in pairs, form color-coded streets; the purchase price for a container is $ 200,000, or $ 400,000 for a 'retail outlet' in, say, 'Rosa Street'; 20,000 sellers employ 10,000 vehicles; 200,000 resellers and retailers from Ukraine, Russia and the Republic of Moldova make daily use of all types of goods; with an estimated daily turnover of $ 20 million, it is estimated that 15 million Ukrainians, about 60% of the population, buy their clothes here; One bottle of 'Chanel No.5' costs only three, a pair of 'Nike sneakers' $ 25.
Barbara KLEMM, Mentor Kirill GOLOVCHENKOs, says: 'These are very successful photographic works on the wholesale markets of the former Soviet republics. Since I photographed some of these markets myself in Siberia at the beginning of 2000, I know how chaotic it is and how difficult it is to get a grip on this topic. '
This verdict is fully confirmed by a look in Kirill GOLOVCHENKO's photo book." (publisher's note, © Snoeck, 2010)
