Background information
"The city that Fred HERZOG documented for more than half a century no longer exists. As a city flaneur, the German-born photographer roamed the streets of Vancouver in the 1950s and 1960s, creating a portrait of his adopted hometown that captures the essence of a bygone era in the random, the spontaneous. The scenes he captured are today among the most important series of early color photography. But it was not until the late 1950s that he decided to work almost exclusively with Kodachrome slide color film. His early black-and-white photographs evoke a sense of melancholy - not nostalgia; the appeal of his work lies in his sense of condensing a psychological state.

The photo volume 'Fred Herzog. Black and White' is the first appreciation of a lesser-known facet of the German-born photographer's work. Complementing the landmark publication of the photography volume 'Modern Color,' this title brings together almost graphic scenes of light and shadow and moments of life outside the city."
