Background information, content
"The photographic book 'Hereafter' by Federico CLAVARINO is based on the story of the Italian photographer's grandparents, John and Mary Phillips. They worked for over thirty years in Sudan, Libya, Oman, Jordan and Cyprus, experiencing firsthand the progressive decline of the British Empire, in which they had lived since childhood and which shaped their view of the world.
The photographer recovered letters, photographs, documents and memoirs that he used as a guide for his own photographic work in Oman, Jordan, Sudan and England. 'Hereafter' thus addresses the creation of a collective memory by rearranging found material along with his own photographs as well as excerpts from conversations to mimic a selective, unconscious, and combinatorial memory process. It is an attempt to deconstruct the narrative of the family shaped by colonial discourse, placing past images in a dialectical relationship with contemporary images to show how empire lives on as a ghostly presence or as an inherited symptom."
