Personal description by Florian van ROEKEL
'A documentary photographer captures life. This may involve exotic or extraordinary places or events, but above all I prefer to turn my camera on the banal and the everyday. Precisely because the everyday escapes our attention. So habitual that we no longer see it. My work tends to present the everyday world in a different light, and I often render it poetically in a book. For example, I've produced a book of photographs on the subject of office work ('How Terry likes his Coffee' 2010) and life in newly-developed neighborhoods ('Fear of Fall', 2013).
Being a schoolboy is part of the everyday order of things for a teenager.
My photographs in the photographic volume 'Le Collége' are intended to tell a story that goes beyond the Jean Fernel school to talk about adolescence in a more general sense. It's a very special period that almost all of us go through. You want to be part of the adult world, to be heard, to be seen, you're bursting with energy, but you're not yet allowed to participate. You float, as it were, in a kind of amniotic fluid that keeps the hard, troubling reality at bay.
Only shreds of information and cynical realities reach children and speak to their imagination, rather like half-faded signs on a blackboard. I'm grateful to the students and teachers at Jean Fernel College for giving me access to their world. I hope that through my photographs they will be able to see themselves, each other and their school with fresh eyes, and learn to discover poetry in everyday life."
