"The project 'Before Dawn' began in the last months of 2004. During this project, I have explored night time and the insomnia and solitary aspects that comes with it.
I have always had a natural attraction towards the quiet moments of night time. These neglected moments hold so much beauty that people take for granted during daytime. Everyday life contains a well known stress-factor that brings us from a to b. But nocturnal shades throw a different light. With so much light-pollution in the cities, it will never be fully dark. But still, these colors and shades are sources for incredible colors in my work.
The images are taken in China, England, Norway, Russia, Scotland and USA." (© Espen KRUGHAUG)
'Before dawn' is showing night images from all over the world (China, England, Norway, Russia, Scotland and USA) - in a nicely done book. Somehow, without knowing too much about the background of the work, the images have a sort of skater-like feel of being close to street level, or working late at night on graffitis, but apart from a lot of great moods and scenes there is some eerily focused details, that stick out as unhomely reminders of sleepless nights.
The introduction for 'Before Dawn' is written by Phillip Chevron, from the Irish music band The Pogues. And In collaboration, the experiment/ambient-band Orangedark composed music inspired by the photos.
About the photographer, Espen KRUGHAUG (b. 1978):
Espen KRUGHAUG was born in a small town called Fetsund, just outside of Oslo. Though photography started out as a hobby, it led to the release of his first book, called 'Skinhead' in 2004 which portraits the non-political skinhead-scene in Norway.
After this release, Espen wanted to pursue his interest and moved to London. He works with installations, photography and video.
