Background information, content
"In her (out-of-print) photography book, 'China Dream,' Chinese-born photographer Teresa ENG, whose parents immigrated to Canada from China via Hong Kong, explores the fractured identity of the second-generation diaspora caught between her country of birth and her motherland. Her cultural knowledge of a country she has never lived in contrasts with the reality of a country in transition.
Between 2013 and 2017, she experienced constant cycles of construction, destruction, and reconstruction on the ground in several cities and surrounding towns. This inspired the stripped back colors of her paintings, achieved in the darkroom. Each visit offered a glimpse into a country in the process of building its future while reconstructing and reinterpreting its past to create a new kind of culture. Historical monuments and buildings destroyed during the Cultural Revolution are being haphazardly rebuilt - often as facsimiles of the originals. The book title 'China Dream' - is also the title of a patriotic calendar found in a newspaper store - as well as a term popularized by General Secretary Xi Jinping in 2013. The title also alludes to the 'American Dream,' in which hard work and entrepreneurship bring prosperity to each individual and the nation." (publisher's free translation, © Skinnerboox, 2019)
