Background information
"This monograph, 'Katherine Avenue', published after Larry SULTAN's death (2009) and his tribute, was created in collaboration with the Cologne gallery Thomas Zander and the Kestnergesellschaft, Hanover.
"Throughout his work, photographer Larry SULTAN explored the private,
political, and social aspects of the American Dream, a collection of
photographs from his three best-known series: 'Pictures from Home', 'The
Valley', and 'Homeland'. Almost all series were created in the San
Fernando Valley, California, where the artist grew up. In 'Pictures from Home', he portrayed his parents' lives over a longer
period of time, 'The Valley' deals with the California porn film
industry, which has settled in the typical suburbs. Larry SULTAN's
latest series, 'Homeland', features pastoral landscape shots - in which
Larry SULTAN has integrated Mexican day laborers who comment strangely
on the deceptive idyl." (publisher's note, © Steidl Verlag, 2010)
