"Costs, benefits and debt crisis - these are the determining variables when talking about Europe today. With his five spotlights on the continent, Dirk ALVERMANN recalls the richness and diversity of European culture and history.
The first of his photographic short stories takes us to Warsaw. In October 1956, he traveled there to tell of a restless city, where even in the shadow of Soviet tanks, the gentle murmur of the Vistula could still be heard. For the second story, he cheats his camera to Tirana in 1962, into isolated Stalinist Albania. In his Naples story, he meets a Mafia boss and narrowly escapes the Carabinieri when he wants to photographically document the nocturnal evacuation of a harbor district.
Like a fairy tale from ancient times, the pictures of the Spanish peninsula of Peñiscola tell of small mountain villages and fishing harbors without high-rise hotels and concrete. And his short story of 1960s Sheffield also recalls a glorious past, when pride in the steel forge had not yet been displaced by the idea of service. As differently history is told, so directly do Europe's political roots explain themselves in the picture." (© Steidl Verlag, 2012)
