Background information
"Francesco Petrarch (1304-1374) is said to have been one of the first to climb the highest and most impressive mountain in Provence, the windswept Mont Ventoux. The letter in which he describes his ascent has become famous because of the new feeling for nature that is expressed in it. During a stay in Provence, Petrarch's letter became an event for Rainer Maria Rilke because of the insight formulated in it, which goes back to Augustine, that an 'outside', however rich, is surpassed by the deep dimension of our inner being."
