"When Dutch photographer Geert Broertjes received a cancer diagnosis, fellow artist Lotte BRONSGEEST asked him if she could take his portrait, 'still pure and without toxic drugs in his body.' Thus began the project in which both visualized, through analog photography, a patient's experience of the three most common cancer treatments: chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. They subjected film rolls and negatives to the same procedures that a cancer patient's body must endure. Geert's urine after chemotherapy was used to soak film rolls, 4 x 5 film was irradiated in the hospital, and burned negatives represent surgical procedures. The photo book 'Outside Room 8' deals with a sick reality in which vulnerability and strength play the main roles and hope is the only constant." (© Kehrer Verlag, 2022)
