About German photographer, Gundula SCHULZE ELDOWY (b.1954, in Erfurt)

Born as Gundula Schulze, she has called herself Gundula SCHULZE ELDOWY (el dowy means light in Arabic) since her stay in Egypt. From 1970 to 1972, she completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk and then studied at the College for Advertising and Design in Berlin-Schöneweide until 1975. From 1977, she worked as a photo lab assistant and began taking photographs. From 1979 to 1984, she studied photography by correspondence at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig under Horst Thorau. Since then she has worked as a freelance photographer and photographer. From 1977 to 1990, she worked on various photo series with which she caused a stir and occasionally incurred the displeasure of the authorities. Until 1990, she produced the black-and-white cycles 'Berlin in einer Hundenach't', 'Arbeit', 'Aktporträts', 'Tamerlan', 'Straßenbild', 'Der Wind füllt sich mit Wasser' as well as the two color cycles 'Der große und der kleine Schritt' and 'Die letzten beißen die Hunde'. In 1985 she met the famous photographer Robert FRANK, who supported her. A trip to New York (1990) marked the beginning of a series of travels and work stays that took her to Italy (1991), Egypt (1993-2000), Japan (1996/97), Moscow (1997), Turkey (1997) and finally to Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador in 2001. Gundula SCHULZE ELDOWY lives in Berlin and Peru.
