About the writer and photographer Arno Otto SCHMIDT (1914-1979)

Arno SCHMIDT is one of the most important writers of the German-speaking world after the Second World War. Already in his 1946 story 'Leviathan' he showed himself to be a radically experimenting avant-gardist of high linguistic artistry, who did not take orthography and syntax into consideration in his phonetically exact reproduction of everyday language. However, he always combined this attitude with traditional storytelling, which is the reason for his special position in the German-language literature of the second half of the 20th century. Arno SCHMIDT died on 03 June 1979 in Celle. About 2500 photographs (paper prints resp. negatives and slides in the format 4 × 4) of Arno Schmidt have been preserved.
