Background information
"'The Kids Are Alright' - that's the title of Ryan McGINLEY's first, still handmade book, which accompanied his first photo exhibition in an empty gallery in SoHo in 2000 - it could stand for his entire body of work to date. Since his early days, the shooting star of the New York photo scene has moved among his peers, the kids in downtown New York, teenagers on trips to the country. On his legendary road trips and also in the studio, he worked with non-professional, young models. Ryan McGINLEY was interested in the attitude to life of young people of his generation, who have fun, let themselves drift, who enjoy the summer in a hedonistic way and romp around naked. Dark sides are left out, except for the scratches and abrasions that can hardly be avoided when jumping off rocks or through treetops. The Whitney Museum of American Art showed his photographs back in 2003; making him the youngest artist ever to have a solo show at that venerable house." (slightly adapted text, original: © Schirmer / Mosel Verlag, 2012)Under the title 'Whistle for the Wind', the German-language edition of the monograph on the work of American photographer Ryan McGINLEY is offered here, which was published at the same time as the US edition at the time.
Content
The out-of-print photographic volume 'Whistle for the Wind' about the work of Ryan McGINLEY contains the images of his individual publications published until 2012 as well as texts in which three prominent authors, such as the writer Chris Kraus, the artist and author John Kelsey as well as the independent filmmaker Gus van Sant, director of 'Drugstore Cowboy' as well as 'My Private Idaho', among others, deal with the phenomenon 'McGinley'. Although the individual publications discussed here are more interesting for collectors and are sought after on the photo book market, 'Whistle for the Wind' has also found its friends, especially because of the quite reasonable price for the format and the good print quality.About US-American photographer, Ryan McGINLEY (b.1977)
