Background information
"In 1944, the German photographer best known for his surreal-looking black-and-white photographs, Herbert LIST, photographed the life-size 'artificial humans' sculpted in wax at the Panoptikum in the Vienna Prater as 'posed, made-up corpses, frozen in the midst of the most violent poses as the inhabitants of a Sleeping Beauty castle.' After more than 75 years, this bibliophile edition, designed according to his original sketch, appears.
Content
For the photo volume, 'Panoptikum' Herbert LIST strung together fairy tale scenes, historical tableaux as well as medical subjects along with a pointed text. A commentary volume places it in the context of his artistic work and the history of the 'Präuscher'schen Panoptikum', where in the 19th century popular scientific interest was mixed with the curiosity in the erotic and exotic.
