Background information
"'Nausea' - taken from Sartre's existential novel written in 1938 - is a series by American photographer Ron JUDE that documents the interiors of public schools in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Atlanta, Georgia between 1990-92. Departing from mere documentation, he lures us through windows, doors and wall gaps into empty classrooms and corridors; where we become increasingly aware of the dangers of our own gaze. Quiet, rather than harassed by the uncertainty of seeing, 'Nausea' sets the framework for the next twenty-five years of his photographic work, including the series 'Other Nature', 'Alpine Star', 'Lick Creek Line' and 'Lago'.Content
At the heart of the photographic volume 'Nausea' by Ron JUDE is the assumption that philosophical inquiry can be filtered and consumed through photographs, just as it is filtered through Sartre's work of literary fiction. The monotonous spaces and objects captured visually in 'Nausea' serve as a task for exploring the connection between the narratives of photography and consciousness. With a distinct visual language characterized by an acute sense of color, radical framing and shallow focus, he created a world that was familiar and uncanny, as well as marked by a pervasive sense of unease. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the inaugural exhibition of 'Nausea' at the Photographers Gallery in London in 1992, the photographer has completely reworked the series. Many of the works in this volume have never been published or exhibited before." (free translation of the publisher's text, © Mack Books, 2017)
