Background information
"Belgian photographer Anton KUSTERS spent six years researching concentration camps and photographing a patch of blue sky over every single site of a former concentration or extermination camp of the German Nazi regime in Europe. The images provide a disturbing glimpse of an intangible trauma that is also a fading collective memory. The 1078 camps existed for 4432 days, from 1933 to 1945, as part of a highly organized system of imprisonment, forced labor, and murder. There are no visible remains of more than half of them. Each Polaroid is blind-stamped by hand with the number of victims under that piece of sky, as well as GPS coordinates. For "The Blue Skies Project," Belgian artist Anton KUSTERS was nominated for the Prix Pictet 2019 and was a finalist for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2020. The exhibition project 'The Blue Skies Project' was curated by Monica Allende and the exhibition is accompanied by a 13-year audio piece by sound artist Ruben Samama." (© Kehrer Verlag, 2021)
