About the Swiss photorealist Franz GERTSCH (1930-2022)
Franz GERTSCH was a painter and graphic artist who achieved international renown for his large-format hyperrealistic portraits. In the mid-1960s, he was decisively influenced by Pop Art. From 1964 to 1969, he created two-dimensional collages based on photographs and made of colored paper (Mick Jagger). From 1969 to 1978, he created large-format photorealistic[6] or hyperrealistic paintings. Huaa...! was followed by numerous paintings based on his own photographs of family members and friends from the Swiss art scene. In 1972 he took part in documenta 5 in Kassel, curated by Harald Szeeman, which made him famous. From 1978, Gertsch turned to individual portraits. He created a portrait cycle of the rock musician Patti Smith and the self-portrait from 1980. He took part in the Venice Biennale in 1978, 1999 and 2003. Franz GERTSCH died in 2022 at the age of 92.
