Background information
"'Fotogeschichten Kölner Südstadt' A wonderful volume of images and text about a quintessentially Cologne neighborhood. Starting in 1955/1956, legendary photographer CHARGESHEIMER was frequently on the road with his camera in Cologne's Severinstrasse and neighboring streets for several projects, capturing everyday life. His photographs - many of which have never been published - are testimonies to a bygone era of the post-war period and evidence of a sensitive photography turned towards the 'little people'. Cologne photographer Eusebius WIRDEIER discovered the treasure during research in the Rheinisches Bildarchiv and edited it for this book. The volume keeps memories alive, awakens emotions and makes upheavals and change recognizable. Photo stories as a journey through time - authentic, vivid, touching. The readable text and the impressive pictures come together to form a valuable piece of local historiography.
Content
The large-format black-and-white illustrated book 'Fotogeschichten Kölner Südstadt. Chargesheimer, Niedecken, Wirdeier' tells the story of a Veedel in the heart of the city. In addition to photographs by CHARGESHEIMER, the musician Wolfgang Niedecken, who grew up in the Severinsviertel, contributes private pictures from his family archive and talks about his childhood between Vringspooz and Nächelsjass. Those photographs, which Eusebius WIRDEIER took between 2019 and 2023 in Cologne's Südstadt, lead into the present." (© Emons Verlag, 2023)
