Background information, content
"First published in 1958, this was the first book by CHARGESHEIMER for which nobel prize winner Heinrich Böll wrote the text - later followed by 'Im Ruhrgebiet' (1958) and 'Menschen am Rhein' (1960).
'Unter Krahnenbäumem' is the name of a street in the heart of Cologne, which today is divided, among other things, by the north-south drive from the 1960s. Therefore, there is hardly any reference to the book today. All the more 'real' Cologne residents go into raptures, since CHARGESHEIMER has documented the housing situation in the 1950s in atmospheric pictures in an impressive manner. The 'Welt' wrote at the time of the book's publication in 1958: 'We have never seen such a book of photographs. It hits us like a pure truth hits us.'
