"Every evening, TV series such as CSI, Crossing Jordan or Quincy show forensics at work and the field of forensics has long since found its way into German crime series as well. The media image of forensic medicine has little to do with reality.
In fact, therefore, only a few people have a realistic idea of how things are going in the autopsy room and in the forensic laboratories and what is also part of the day-to-day work of legal doctors.
The photographer Patrik BUDENZ wanted to know more about it. Based on the media image, he accompanied legal doctors with the camera at work at the crime scene, in the section room, in the laboratory and at the desk.
As a photographer, he proceeded as thoroughly as the physicians themselves. He observed the events closely and translated them into images that document the day-to-day work of legal doctors precisely.
Patrik BUDENZ deliberately avoided drastic effects. Working on the series nevertheless became a borderline experience for him, because much that forensic doctors see in their everyday lives is beyond the imagination of most people.
The head of the institute for forensic medicine at the Berlin Charitè, Prof. Dr. Michael Tsokos, introduces the topic with an essay. A detailed conversation that the photographer had with the sociologist Prof. Dr. Hubert Knoblauch and the expert for 'Post Mortem Photography' PD Dr. Matthias Christen has dealt with the handling of images of dead people and dissected corpses."
