Background information
"Approaching the question of one's own sexuality beyond taboo boundaries is possible precisely in art. It not only allows the safe play with the sexes, with forbidden desires, it alone grasps their contradictory nature. Not least favored by the social media, a young and committed scene in the field of queer photography has established itself in recent years. Following the need for self-portrayal, self-assurance and self-reflection, many photographers primarily show gayness as a private idyll. At the same time, their own and society's treatment of transsexuality and gender roles is critically questioned, or the pornographic is shown in its corrosive or affirmative power.
Films, series and the appropriation by mainstream culture suggest a broad social acceptance of queer life models. That being gay or lesbian can still mean exclusion, loneliness, stigmatization, and violence in certain countries and societies is impressively demonstrated by a number of documentary photographers* who also consider the colonial origins of many bans on same-sex contact and the regime of sexuality itself."
