About German Photographer Horst H. BAUMANN (1934 - 2019)

The artist, designer and photographer Horst H. BAUMANN was best known for his laser art. As early as 1953, he had his first publication in a trade magazine, which was quickly followed by publications in twen, Du, magnum, Stern or international magazines such as Town or Holiday, among others. From 1954 to 1957, he studied metallurgy (as well as pedagogy from 1972 to 1974) at the RWTH Aachen and, as a late student, philosophy/media at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf from 1994 to 2004.
Baumann began working as a photographer and designer in 1957. In 1956, 1958 and 1960 he was represented at photokina Cologne and in 1964 in the important show 'The photographer's Eye' at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. From 1963 to 1964 he was a guest lecturer at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm. His volume 'Die neuen Matadore' (The New Matadors), published in 1965, with color photographs from the world of motor sports, caused a sensation. From 1966 he worked as a light artist, he installed in 1977 as a participant of documenta 6 with his Laserscape Kassel, the first permanent laser sculpture in the world. For the last 25 years Horts H. BAUMANN lived in a residential studio in Düsseldorf. His photographic estate was given to the photo gallery ZEPHYR in Mannheim in 2020.
