Background information
Time and again it brought the native Herdorf photographer August SANDER back to the Westerwald, to a part of his homeland, which he knew how to portray with particular dedication. Resident in Cologne since 1911 and already at this time achieved a high reputation in the world of art and photography, he made many short trips to the village communities around Altenkirchen. There he met numerous families who particularly appreciated his photographic work and took portraits for August SANDER. But many typical local and landscape photographs can also be found in his work, which is so famous today, which provide impressive views from the recent past.

The catalog volume, 'Der Westerwald im Spiegel der Zeit', published in 2016 on the occasion of an exhibition on site, contains around 50 of the more than 130 works from the holdings of the Photographische Sammlung / SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne and provides an exciting insight into August SANDER's work. The volume combines motifs from his work 'People of the 20th Century' that were created in the Westerwald with photographs that exemplarily represent the part of the August Sander archive that the photographer had filed under the name 'Bauernarchiv'.
