About Japanese photographer, Iwao YAMAWAKI (1898-1987)

Iwao YAMAWAKI studied architecture at the Tokyo School of Arts, before joining a construction company. At the same time he began to take pictures with his 35mm camera. In 1930 he gave up his job in Japan to apply at the 'Bauhaus' in Germany. From 1939 to 1942 he was trained there in the subjects of architecture and photography. After returning to his homeland, he began to convey the contents of the Bauhaus. However, Yamawaki eventually gave up his photographic activities in favor of working as an architect and teaching at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Tokyo. Until his death he curated various exhibitions on 'Bauhaus photography' and wrote articles for Japanese photo magazines.
