Background information
The 'Bonsai' series by Masao YAMAMOTO, focuses on the tradition of Japanese 'tray planting', a contemplative practice of caring for small trees that mimic the shape and scale of full-sized trees. To these photographs of the trees themselves, Masao YAMAMOTO adds his characteristic surrealist touch by manipulating the backgrounds and perspectives of his compositions - a tree is bigger than the moon, a bonsai bobbles on a cliff and puts a mountain range in the shade. The viewer is drawn by Masao YAMAMOTO's insertion of a cultivated, 'inner' object into an apparently existing external environment and then back to the studio. The photographic trick is to blur these layers.
Content
The photo book 'Bonsai. Microcosm. Macrocosm' by Masao YAMAMOTO is a very beautiful art book. It contains the art photographs in black and white in a design that is as artistic as it is elaborate. The volume is thread-stitched and comes in a slipcase covered with silky Japan paper.
