Background information
"In her work, 'InselWesen', Ostkreuz photographer Mila TESHAIEVA brings us to the inner world of the Föhr Island, whose inhabitants keep an almost sacred connection to their traditions and to nature. This connection is also complex: once an isolated spot in the North Sea, the island is now trying to protect its unique identity from assimilation and disappearance. Developing the work over the course of two years as Artist-in-Residence at the Museum Kunst der Westküste, Föhr, the artist interacted closely with islanders and was accepted into the inner circles of island life. Created in a style reminiscent of old paintings, the work forms the island as an imaginary world, at the same time underlining a touching fragility of its real essence.
