Background information, content
Legendary skate photographer Helge TSCHARN is back, picking up where he left off - but with a slightly different approach. He did revisit the spots of some of his classic shots - but this time without the skaters - to see how time has changed them, and gathers the result in the hundred-page limited edition photo book 'Local Continuum'. In it, he juxtaposes the original photo with the current shot of the spot, taken from the same perspective. Iain Borden, professor of architecture and urban culture, who contributed a text to the book along with Holger von Krosigk and Veith Kilberth, recognizes 'the painful absence of the skater' in these new photos. He says the comparison shows that the city and its architecture need bodies, movement and activity to breathe life into static space. The original images of the tricks shine like spots in the otherwise aged scenery.
The photo book 'Local Continuum' by Helge TSCHARN is more than a collection of iconic skate photos. He documents the transformation of public space and the decay or even disappearance of spots, thus liberating the original images from their time capsule and integrating them into ongoing urban development."
