About Japanese photographer, Shomei TOMATSU (1930-2012)
Born in Nagoya on Honshu, Shomei TOMATSU moved to Tokyo after studying at the University of Aichi, where he worked for Iwanami Shashin Bunko. After a few years, he became self-employed and founded the photographic cooperative 'VIVO' in 1959 together with Ikko NARAHARA, Eikoh HOSOE, Kikuji KAWADA, Akira SATO and Akira TANNO. In post-war Japan, he developed a unique documentary style of expression by intensively observing society and thus strongly influenced the next generation of photographers, including Takuma NAKAHIRA and Daido MORIYAMA, who became famous in their own right.
