Background information
Jeanloup SIEFF, who has died in Paris aged 66, was a photographer renowned for his semi-erotic black and white pictures of fashion models, though his subject matter was far broader than this and some of his best-known images are landscapes, street scenes and portraits of Hollywood stars. His black and white street scenes showing the cafes and bookshops of the Left Bank, the most famous being a portrait of the Cafe de Flore, depicting a small table, a coffee cup and a pedestrian crossing the street, have become such standard images of Paris in the 1960s that they are now regularly recycled for advertisements. In 1977 he produced a series of photographs of Death Valley in California. Although he felt no need to prove himself as a 'serious' photographer, his melancholy images of the cracked and parched earth received great critical acclaim.
