Background information
"Asked what made a good picture for him, Arnold ODERMATT, gave the laconic answer that became the subtitle of this first biographical publication about his paintings and his life.
Content
The volume 'Ein gutes Bild muss scharf sein' (A good picture must be sharp)fills a gap in the literature about Arnold ODERMATT, the Nidwalden police officer who, as a photographic autodidact in the early post-war period, began to record accidents, police service, everyday life and his family with his 6x6 medium format camera. Mercilessly, the well-known soberly surrealistic accident images repeatedly break through the inner-Swiss idyll of family and professional life in the canton of Nidwalden.
The texts by Daniel Blochwitz, Matthias Dell and Harald Szeemann, interpret ODERMATT's pictorial cosmos. The miraculous discovery, development and dissemination of the work via books, media, exhibitions and galleries is also described in detail. Swiss director Urs Odermatt discovered his father's paintings in 1991 during research for his feature film 'Wachtmeister Zumbühl,' and the rest is a wonderfully instructive and entertaining story about the art world of the last 25 years."
