Background information
Over the years, filmmaker Sébastien LIFSHITZ has amassed a large collection of images depicting men and women at the intersection of private life, the history of homosexuality, and feminist activism. The authors of the volume 'Mauvais genre. Les travestis à travers un siècle de photographie amateur', Christine Bard & Isabelle Bonnet, shed light on this little-known, often-silenced aspect through representations from the Sébastien Lifshitz collection.
Content
The photo compendium 'Mauvais genre. Les travestis à travers un siècle de photographie amateur' presents views of men and women wearing the clothing of the opposite sex. Whether in a photo studio at the end of the 19th century or behind the scenes of 1930s cabarets, whether in the privacy of the bedroom or under the flash of a Polaroid camera, whether in clever poses or completely uninhibited, these photographs form a corpus as unusual as it is precious.
