"Archivo Muerto (engl.: Dead Archive) or how the historical memory around violence of a country is thrown away as garbage
El Espacio circulated in Bogota for almost five decades. It was one of the few and last 'Red Press' of the city.
Every morning, it showed gore pictures of crimes, red headlines and topless women in the last page. Its photographic archive, thrown away and collected by street recyclers, was sold by weight as reusable paper. It was almost definitely lost but due to the fact that some pictures fell into the hands of few collectors, a small part of it was saved.
A group of original images, with their identification data on the back, was selected by Andrés ORJUELA. He has chosen to re-interpret and gradually reveal remains of this archive.
The prehistory of drug trafficking becomes imminent, current, since 'Archivo Muerto' is a mirror where we see the same street murders, the same stowaways trying to cross the border, the same police abuses, the same small traffickers captured and exhibited in the news nowadays.
ORJUELA witnesses them in other time and in other faces. He enlarges the original images and manually lights them up, to paint the harmful mundane; inspecting, in this way, the pernicious order of the worlds.
The images keep the title of the original photographs, that is, the identification title given by the newspaper, and it includes, as an annex, an 1:1 size descriptive sheet, made in a hurry as in the newspaper’s newsroom, with dates and annotations; keeping the structure.
This look is closer to the executioner than to the victim, since the artist does not alter in essence the instructive message of the extinct Bogota’s newspaper. The application of the pigments, highlights, by contrast, the own 'brutalism' of El Espacio.
Thus, as a witness and as an archiver, ORJUELA makes visible the invisibility of the already described social order. Divided, illuminated, as the story itself, this archive is dedicated to those who live in hardship. More than a file of evils, it is a file of misfortune, of the captured, arrested, executed, run over, shot and slashed. Extracted from the archive of El Espacio, these images are like tarot cards. They appear without chronological, iconographic, sequential order, which allows us to see together the punishments and abuses, the crimes of tomorrow.
Perhaps, the progressive interest that 'Archivo Muerto' reaches today has to do with the 'Colombianization' of the world in general, which consists in the corruption without borders and in all fronts: the 'Panama Papers' and Odebrecht, the growth of private armies - such as Blackwater - , Colombian paramilitaries and Mexican 'Los Zetas', coups without coup in countries like Brazil and Paraguay; the normalization of crime and the evident global narcotization that lead us to return to the almost inevitable issue of drugs and Colombian society. Archivo muerto has to do, obviously, with that moment when Colombians 'stopped washing dishes and started to wash money' –borrowing the words of the Colombian filmmaker Luis Ospina.
The glorification of Escobar in Netflix, of which publishers all around the world are accomplices and beneficiaries by publishing the memories of his son, brothers and various biographies. They all maliciously conceal the relations among the CIA, the mafia and the dark regimes from Central and South America.
In Colombia, there is a long history and tradition of violence from which anyone can learn. Something that can not be denied is the development of a criminal culture - promoted by it’s political class - that comes through the birds and bandits of 'La Violencia' in the 50’s and continues with the bands that controlled the emerald mines and the beginnings of cocaine trafficking to Batista’s Cuba, with the origins of marijuana trafficking from the Caribbean Coast to the shores of Florida in the years after the war in Vietnam, which reaches its zenith not with Pablo Escobar, but with Álvaro Uribe and his government that murdered more citizens than the three dictatorships of the Southern Cone combined. Hence, today we use the term 'Colombianization' to describe the violent deterioration of any society.
'Archivo Muerto' chooses the past to witness, fragmentarily, the development and evolution of a primary violence, which is the product of a tremendous and not mentioned social exclusion, true mother of all evils." (publisher's note)

"'Archivo Muerto' ó cómo la memoria histórica de un país en torno a la violencia se tira a la basura.
El Espacio circuló en Bogotá por casi cinco décadas, fue uno de los pocos y el último de los periódicos de crónica roja de la ciudad. Fotos de crímenes sangrientos, titulares en letras rojas y chicas en topless en la última página, era lo que ofrecía cada mañana. Su archivo fotográfico, tirado a la basura y recogido por recicladores callejeros, fue vendido por peso como papel reutilizable y se perdió casi definitivamente, pues algunas fotografías cayeron en manos de escasos coleccionistas que salvaron una mínima parte de él. Un grupo de imágenes originales, con sus datos de identificación en el reverso, fueron seleccionadas por Andrés ORJUELA, quien ha escogido re interpretar y dar a conocer, progresivamente, restos de este archivo.
La pre historia del narcotráfico se vuelve inminente, actual, pues Archivo muerto es un espejo donde vemos los mismos asesinatos callejeros, los mismos polizontes intentando cruzar fronteras, los mismos atropellos policiales, los mismos pequeños traficantes capturados que exhiben las noticias hoy, y que en otro momento y en otros rostros testifica ORJUELA, quien amplia el original y lo ilumina manualmente, para pintar lo mundano nocivo, inspeccionando el orden pernicioso del mundo.
Las imágenes mantienen el título de la fotografía original, es decir el título de identificación dado en el periódico para la noticia, e incluyen como anexo en tamaño 1:1 la ficha descriptiva, hecha a las carreras en la sala de redacción del diario, con fechas y anotaciones, manteniendo sin desestructurar, una mirada que está más cerca del verdugo que de la víctima, pues el artista no altera en esencia el mensaje aleccionador del extinto diario bogotano, y su aplicación de pigmentos, resaltando por contraste el 'brutalismo' propio de El Espacio.
Así, como testigo y como archivador, ORJUELA hace visible lo invisible del orden social ya descrito. Seccionado, iluminado como la historia misma, este archivo está dedicado a los que viven en infortunio, pues más que un archivo de las maldades es un archivo de la desgracia, de los capturados, los detenidos, los ajusticiados, los atropellados, los abaleados y los acuchillados.
Extraídas del archivo de El Espacio, estas imágenes son como cartas de un tarot, que aparecen sin orden cronológico, iconográfico, secuencial, pero que permiten ver en conjunto en los castigos y los abusos, los crímenes del mañana.
Quizá el interés progresivo que alcanza hoy Archivo muerto tenga que ver con la 'colombianización' del mundo en general, consistente en la corrupción sin fronteras en todos los frentes: los 'Panama Papers' y Odebrecht, el crecimiento de los ejércitos privados, como 'Blackwater', los paramilitares colombianos y los zetas mexicanos, los golpes de Estado sin golpe en países como Brasil y Paraguay, la normalización del crimen y la evidente narcotización global que nos lleva a volver al casi inevitable tema de las drogas y la sociedad colombiana.
'Archivo Muerto' tiene que ver, evidentemente, con ese momento en que los colombianos “dejamos de lavar platos y empezamos a lavar plata” para usar las palabras del cineasta colombiano Luis Ospina. La glorificación de Escobar en Netflix, de la que son cómplices y beneficiarias editoriales en todos los países, publicando las memorias de su hijo, hermanos y biografías varias, escurren todas el bulto y ocultan melindrosamente las relaciones entre la CIA, la mafia y los oscuros regímenes de América Central y del Sur.
En Colombia hay una larga historia y tradición de violencia de la que cualquiera puede aprender, pues algo que no puede negarse es el desarrollo de una cultura criminal -promovida por su clase política- que viene a través de los pájaros y bandoleros de 'La Violencia' de los años 50, que continúa con las bandas que controlaban las minas de esmeraldas y los inicios del tráfico de cocaína a la Cuba de Batista, con los orígenes del tráfico de marihuana desde la Costa Caribe a las costas de la Florida en los años posteriores a la guerra de Vietnam, y que alcanza su cenit no con Pablo Escobar, sino con Álvaro Uribe y su gobierno que asesinó a mas ciudadanos que las tres dictaduras del cono sur juntas. De ahí que hoy usemos el termino 'colombianización' para describir el deterioro violento de cualquier sociedad.
'Archivo Muerto' escoge el pasado para testificar fragmentariamente, el desarrollo y evolución de una violencia primaria, que es producto de una tremenda y no mencionada exclusión social, verdadera madre de todos los males." (publisher's note)
