Background information, content
"Robert FRANK wrote to his mother in Switzerland from New York in March 1949, sending her as a birthday gift a book maquette (dummy) from a series of photographs he had taken during a visit to Peru. For himself, Robert FRANK produced an identical book. 'Peru' is of great historical importance both in the history of the artist and in the history of photography - one of the two book dummies is now in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Some black-and-white photographs of the Peru series were known, but previously the entire series had been seen by only a few people. In 2008, the photobook 'Peru' was the first presentation of the complete sequence of images, based on the original book, which Robert FRANK conceived and realized himself." (© Steidl Verlag, 2008)
In terms of photo book history, the photo book 'Peru' can be classified after his debut volume '40 Photos' (1947, re-released in 2010 as 'Portfolio') and the photo book 'Paris' from 1953, and about 10 years before 'The Americans'.
