Background information
"The two-volume work 'Autopsie. Deutschsprachige Fotobücher' (German Photo Books) presents the German-language photo books of the interwar period in all their variety. In addition to the two volumes, which were quickly sold out, there is also a website with information. The focus on the German-speaking countries and the period from 1918 to 1945 emphasizes the international standing that the production and publishing of this cultural area and this epoch in the history of the photobook.
Content of 'Autopsie. Volume 1'
In more than 70 text contributions by specialists, the features of the photo books, their printing, their marketing and their significance for the history of photo books are discussed. Selected publishers and characteristic book series are presented. The essays deal monographically with the book publications of photographers such as Karl BLOSSFELDT, Heinrich HAUSER, Heinrich HOFFMANN, Emil Otto HOPPÉ, Albert RENGER-PATZSCH and Paul WOLFF. Overview articles are devoted to architectural photography, propaganda works, photo-illustrated children's books, photo-technical guides, film as a pictorial theme and other special forms of the photo book.
In addition, important individual books are examined more closely, such as 'Malerei Photographie Film' (1925) by László MOHOLY-NAGY or 'Berühmte Zeitgenossen in unbewachter Augenblicken' (1931) by Erich SALOMON. An index expands the presentation to a reference work of German-language photographic literature. The rich illustrative material shows the photo books with their covers, dust jackets and inner pages as well as examples of the associated publisher's advertising. Many rare book titles are thus newly made accessible for photo book research.
