Background information
Gerhard RICHTER's early work in Dresden ended in February 1961 with his flight from the GDR. The artist began his official work in the West at the end of 1962 with the painting 'Tisch', which is listed as number one in the catalog of his oeuvre. In between there is a period of one and a half years, which has remained largely unnoticed in the reception of art history. These are the months in which Gerhard RICHTER, who at that time still called himself Gerd, tried to gain a foothold in his new Düsseldorf surroundings.
