"The key themes of Jakob TUGGENER's work throughout his work are factory work, simple country living, and - in contrast - the glamorous social events of high society, while being fascinated by roads, harbors and ships, car racing and air shows. Using his camera, he sought to reproduce all facets of modern life - a world between dark factory halls and bright dance halls.
During the 1930s, TUGGENER assembled print-ready book dummies dealing with all these topics, ie bound series of pictures from up to 150 full- or double-sided original prints, none of which was published during his lifetime - with the exception of the 1943 title 'Fabrik ', TUGGENER's groundbreaking 'Bildepos der Technik' (engl: Picture of Technology) - re-editied in 2011 - which laid the foundation for its international reputation.
Many of his motifs are also the focus of his short films, but their genre oscillates somewhere between documentation and fantasy.
'Books and Films' brings together facsimile editions of the first twelve original book dummies from 1936 to 1982 as well as a selection of his 16mm short films on DVD. All films are black and white and no text - just as the artist always wanted.
This is the first time that Jakob TUGGENER's extensive work has been presented to a broad audience." (publisher's note)

I
n the 1950s his work was introduced to an international audience thanks to Otto STEINERT and Edward STEICHEN.
TUGGENER’s uncompromising subjective style, influenced by 1920s German Expressionist film, inspired many young Swiss photographers including Robert FRANK and Hans DANUSER. The first comprehensive retrospective of his work was held at Kunsthaus Zürich in 2000.
