'It doesn't happen very often,' says Anton CORBIJN, 'that you photograph someone for more than 30 years. The collaboration has developed very organically, and that is something nice in itself. We take our work very seriously, but when it comes to things together, we are like children who don't want to grow up. It is liberating and a legal drug that we urgently need.'" "'Waits / Corbijn 1977 - 2011' is the chronicle of an artistic collaboration that goes back over 35 years to the first B / W recordings made by the young, still largely unknown Anton CORBIJN in 1977 by Tom Waits in Holland. Anton CORBIJN then became famous for his iconic-enigmatic portraits of musicians and other artists - from U2 and Miles Davis to Robert De Niro and Clint Eastwod to Damien Hirst and Gerhard Richter - as a pioneer in the field of music videos and, in recent years Years, to become an award-winning film director. In 1977 Tom Waits was known all over the world for fantastic, timeless songs about a Los Angeles noir, for which John Fante and Jack Kerouac were godfathers as well as the jazz, blues and tin pan alley that Tom Waits had recorded through his pores since childhood would have. Before him was the partnership with Kathleen Brennan - from which legendary albums such as 'Rain Dogs' (with the cover showing a scene from Anders PETERSEN's photo book 'Café Lehmitz') and 'Mule Variations' emerged - his films with people like Francis Ford Coppola and Jim Jarmusch, and his theater projects with Robert Wilson. Those first photos form the beginning of two careers that are inextricably linked and have promoted each other.
Tom Waits' special dynamics helped CORBIJN to his narrative, cinematic style: to pictures where one thinks to burst in the middle of a dramatic event. Anton CORBIJN in turn helped Tom Waits to a new theatrical self that perfectly matched the experimental music that Tom Waits produced with Kathleen Brennan The photos that Tom Waits took himself and that are gathered here for the first time under the heading 'curiosities' offer optical access to an artistic genius that millions of fans only know from his music.
