Background information
"BRASSAI (1899-1984) was the first and is still the most famous chronicler of nocturnal Paris. When the versatile Hungarian born in 1924 came to France, he not only enthusiastically plunged into Parisian nightlife, but also soon began to photograph on his nightly rambles through the city. Barely ten years later, in 1932, his book 'Paris de Nuit', which suddenly made him famous, became a classic of photographic literature and technically an unprecedented masterpiece. The light, the condition of each photography, is reduced in BRASSAI's pictures to a few stage lights or lamps in the relevant establishments, to sparsely lit windows, a street lamp in the fog, reflections on rain-soaked asphalt. The generous donation made by BRASSAI's widow to the French state in 2002 and the auction of his workshop in 2006 brought further footage to light and called specialists and photo historians on the scene.
Content
The result of her work is this great BRASSAI book, which focuses on his 30s night pictures. Located between reportage, social documentation and poetic vision, BRASSAI's nocturnal Paris of the interwar period is above all a milestone in the history of 20th century photography. The volume also includes texts by Sylvie Aubenas (Principal Conservator and Head of Printmaking and Photography at the Bibliothèque nationale de France) and by Quentin Bajac (Head of the Photography Collection at the Center Pompidou and Designate Principal Conservator of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York."
