Background information
"Renowned Dutch book and media designer Irma BOOM is known for her bold and experimental approach to challenging the conventions of the traditional book, both in terms of design and printed content. The book designer has designed and decorated over 350 art books, including photographic publications by internationally renowned photographers such as Rineke DIJKSTRA, Viviane SASSEN, Jacquekine HASSINK, Thomas DEMAND, Tim WALKER, and others. Many of her books are in the permanent collection of MoMA in New York and in the special collections of the University of Amsterdam.
Content
In her publication 'Book Manifesto' (the 3rd book of the series) Irma BOOM presents her vision of the nature, meaning and relevance of the book. This was based on intensive research she conducted on the development of the book in the Vatican Library. She shares her findings with a selection of more than 350 books she has designed, discussing in detail their context and relationship to the traditional book.
With this 1000-page, richly illustrated book, the Dutch book designer hopes to inspire the new generation of designers and encourage them to experiment in order to secure the book's position for the future. The volume also includes texts by Irma BOOM, Rem Koolhaas, Michael Rock, Mathieu Lommen, Louwrien Wijers, Nina Stritzler-Levine, as well as Johan Pijnappel."
