The photo book 'Doors' is centered around a document of the European tour of photographer Yusuke YAMATANI's self portrait work 'Doors', which combines photography with drum performance. In this finalized version the book presents itself as one possible solution of photographic expression that diverges from performance. In addition to photos taken during the performances, snapshots from the road, landscapes, meals, and people he met are recorded in the photo book. Publicizing flyers, postcards from various cities, photograms that record impressions on the drums, and pictures received later from the audience are also important elements of the book. It also includes a 20,000 word interview with Yusuke YAMATANI, encompassing his outlook on photography as a result of devoting the last two years to this work.
Background information
In the performance, several cameras surround Yusuke YAMATANI and his drum set, and as the sensors pick up on the vibrations of the hit drums, the cameras trigger intense flashes of strobe lights, capturing Yusuke YAMATANI himself. The resulting photos are processed through a computer and printed out continuously from several printers. He induces a trance-like state by furiously hitting the drums, capturing self portraits that oscillate between the conscious and unconscious, while the automatically rotating cameras take photos of the audience and surrounding space.
Yusuke YAMATANI completed a one month tour in September 2019, going through six European countries, with this performance that he has been presenting since 2018. 3,563 Yamatanies were collected throughout the eight performances, over a total distance of 4980 km.
