Background information
"In his photo book 'Stakeout Diary', Yukichi WATABE documented the investigation into a gruesome murder that took place in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, in 1958. Their investigation included stakeouts in downtown Tokyo, areas that have since changed beyond recognition.
Some photographs from the series appeared in a magazine that same year, but there was no opportunity for further publication. So the photographs remained little known. In 2006, a British old bookseller found 120 sheets of these photographic works in Jinbou-chou (central Tokyo), and the work was published in Paris in 2011. This photo book "A Criminal Investigation" caused a worldwide sensation.
This publication, 'Stakeout Diary', is an updated selection of these photographs, using prints made especially for this purpose. Even for those lucky enough to own a copy of 'A Criminal Investigation', the new book was a revelation. A total of three editions prove its appeal and its success with the public” (freely translated and somewhat adapted publisher’s text, © Roshin Books, 2013)
